What can I do to help myself if I'm waiting for treatment or not having treatment?
I know that many people with FND are either waiting for long periods of time to see someone for treatment, or are not having treatment at all.
Some people with FND may have reached a point where they are ‘self-managing’ and althought they would rather not have the symptoms, they understand that this is how things are, at least for now.
For other people, especially those first diagnosed, it is incredibly frustrating to be trying to improve the condition on your own. I know that this site is not enough for that situation, but I hope it can help a little.
There is information throughout the website that may be of some help to you but here are some tips to make the most of it:
Dont be too hard on yourself! Many people with FND tend to give themselves a really hard time for all kinds of reasons. Improving FND often means making time to be kinder to yourself.
Perhaps start with some introductory videos to help you understand FND. You can see them on this page.
Read about the FND symptoms you have (and not the ones you don’t)
Have you talked about this diagnosis with your family or friends? Would that help you?
If you have motor symptoms like limb weakness or walking problems read through the advice on the physiotherapy page. There is a document there made for physiotherapists to help them understand FND. You might find it helpful to see whats written there – or perhaps share it with your physiotherapist if they arent confident about FND.
If you are having functional seizure/blackouts then there is some information about how begin thinking about your seizures, and the kinds of techniques that are used to help people get control of them on this page
site we will assume that you are happy with it.
We will be re-directing you to the University of Edinburgh’s donate page, which enable donations in
a secure manner on our behalf. We use donations for keeping the site running and further FND
